Manchester United have reportedly shelved plans to sign a new midfielder this summer with Paul Pogba set to remain at the club.
Pogba’s future remains uncertain after entering the final season of his contract at Old Trafford, though the midfielder’s hopes of a move to Paris Saint-Germain have been ended by Lionel Messi’s move to the Parc des Princes.
Messi has signed a lucrative two-year deal with the Ligue 1 side after leaving Barcelona on a free transfer, with the announcement of the deal making a subsequent deal for Pogba difficult for PSG to complete.
According to theย Mail, Pogba could now walk away from the Red Devils on a free transfer for a second time next summer, having previously signed for Juventus on a Bosman deal before returning in an ยฃ89m world record transfer in 2016.
The news that the 28-year-old will remain in Manchester until January at least has now altered the club’s transfer plans, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side shelving the idea of signing a new midfielder during the current window.
United have already completed the signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and are close to finalising Raphael Varane’s arrival from Real Madrid, but had been keen for further additions in midfield and at full-back.
Ruben Neves, Eduardo Camavinga and Saul Niguez had all been linked as potential replacements for Pogba, who is understood to be relaxed regarding his future and content to remain in the Premier League for a further season.
