Manchester United are ‘making progress’ over a deal for Villarreal defender Pau Torres and are in ‘dialogue’ with Real Madrid over Raphael Varane.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to sign a new centre-back this summer with the Red Devils assessing their options at present, with the club’s board understood to have held discussions over deals for both Torres and Varane.
United want to sign a centre-back to partner club captain Maguire, with the Manchester Evening News reporting the club’s board have made progress on a deal for Spain international Torres.
The 24-year-old has won admirers from some of Europe’s leading clubs in recent seasons and impressed as Villarreal beat United to win the Europa League last month.
Torres is currently with the Spain squad at Euro 2020 and is understood to have a release clause of around €60m in his contract, though there is a ‘belief’ that Villarreal could consider player-plus-cash offers in the current financial climate.
United have also made an offer for Real Madrid star Varane, whose future remains uncertain as the defender enters the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu.
The bid was believed to be around £50m and has been rejected by the Spanish side, though United are unwilling to match the £80m asking price for the France international, given he will be available on a free transfer in 2022.
