Man United pull out of Saul race with club now ‘unlikely’ to sign a midfielder this summer

Manchester United have pulled out of the race to sign Saul Niguez with the club ‘unlikely’ to sign a midfielder before the transfer window closes.

Saul has been linked with a move to the Premier League after expressing a desire to leave Atletico Madrid this summer and has reportedly been offered to English clubs, though the Red Devils are unlikely to conduct further business following the signings of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been linked with the addition of a new central midfielder, but further incomings are not expected with any moves dependent on outgoings.

United have not sanctioned the sale of any player on a permanent deal so far this summer, with loan departures for names such as Andreas Pereira, Axel Tuanzebe and Brandon Williams the club’s significant outgoings.

The Manchester Evening News are reporting that Jesse Lingard and Diogo Dalot shape as the only potential exits in the coming days, the former a target for West Ham following a successful loan spell at the London Stadium last term.

The club’s failure to raise further funds leaves Chelsea as the likeliest destination for Saul, with reports this week having suggested the west Londoners have made an initial loan offer for the midfielder.

Saul has been keen to leave the Spanish champions after growing frustrated with his role under Diego Simeone, who has strengthened his midfield options with the signing of Rodrigo De Paul from Udinese.
