Aston Villa in advanced talks with Emery over new deal to ward off Man United interest

Aston Villa are in advanced talks with Unai Emery over a new contract at Villa Park, in a bid to ward off interest from Manchester United.

Aston Villa are in advanced talks with Unai Emery over a new contract at Villa Park, in a bid to ward off interest from Manchester United.

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Emery, should the club decide to part company with Michael Carrick amid a difficult start to the season.

Emery’s achievements at Aston Villa, who he has twice led to Champions League qualification and Europa League success, have made him a leading candidate should Carrick depart Old Trafford.

Aston Villa are aware of appreciation from Manchester United for the Spaniard and are now working on an improved deal. According to the Telegraph, contract talks are at an advanced stage. Emery’s current deal expires in 2029.

Emery has transformed Aston Villa since arriving in 2022, and is happy at the club. He is understood to hold an influence that exceeds peers at other Premier League clubs, with control over all aspects of the football programme.

Emery met with club chairman Nassef Sawiris on Wednesday to discuss an extension to his time with the club.

In a statement the club said: “Aston Villa held an important working meeting today to plan the club’s future and lay the foundations for its long-term sporting and institutional project.

“The meeting brought together Nassef Sawiris, the club’s chairman and Unai Emery, alongside president of football operations Roberto Olabe and director of football operations Damián Vidagany.”
