Manchester United are increasingly confident they will secure the signing of Barcelona and Holland midfielder Frenkie De Jong.
De Jong has long been heralded as one of the finest midfielders of his generation and according to The Sun Man United believe they are well placed to reunite the 25-year-old with Erik Ten Hag at Old Trafford.
De Jong and Ten Hag previously worked together at Ajax and enjoyed huge success both domestically and in European competition. United are looking to revamp their midfield after announcing the departures of Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Paul Pogba, and Jesse Lingard, with Ten Hag clearly targeting De Jong as a statement signing and a player who he can build a new look side around.
Despite De Jong insisting earlier this week that Barca is his ‘dream club’ and that he wants to stay, the Catalan club are a mess financially and have opened negotiations with United over the £75 million rated midfielder.
The 40 cap Holland international moved to the Nou Camp from Ajax in a £64 million deal in 2019 and although Barca boss Xavi rates De Jong highly he understands the clubs financial predicament, with the loss of the midfielder offset by the emergence of brilliant, young academy graduates Pedri and Gavi.
