Man City hero Ake ‘so happy’ after finally ending Spurs hoodoo

Nathan Ake became the first Manchester City player to score at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to send the club to the next round of the FA Cup.

The holders had not scored or won at Spurs since 2018, when the Lilywhites were playing at Wembley Stadium while their new ground was still under construction.

But Ake scored late on to give Man City a rare away victory over Tottenham and put their name in the draw for the fifth round.

“I’m so happy. It was tough but I think we played well all game,” the centre-back told ITV Sport.

“We trusted the way we played, we created multiple chances and had the belief to keep going even though we weren’t scoring. I thought it was never going to come but it finally did.

“I think it was important to go through, we want to be in every competition possible and now we’re through to the next round.”

Spurs appealed against the goal, complaining that goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was fouled by Ruben Dias before Ake put the ball in the net.

“I’m not sure what happened, I just saw the ball in front of me and went for it. I’ll have to see [it back],” the Dutchman said.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola praised Ake after the final whistle. “He has incredible tempo in our set pieces and attack, and it’s one of his best skills.”
