Harry Maguire is set to stay at Manchester United this month with Erik ten Hag keen to retain the central defender for squad depth.
Maguire has made just three league starts this season and has been overlooked since returning from the World Cup, with full-back Luke Shaw preferred in an unfamiliar centre-back role for recent fixtures.
Lisandro Martinez’s return from Argentina’s World Cup celebrations will further reduce Maguire’s chance of regular minutes, but United are understood to be reluctant to allow the defender to leave in the January window.
According to the Daily Mail, Ten Hag wants to keep Maguire among his options to ensure that United have the required depth to mount a push for Champions League football.
Scott McTominay has also been linked with an exit but is another who the club are keen to keep, despite the Scotland international’s struggle for minutes.
The summer arrival of Casemiro has reduced McTominay’s role and the midfielder has not started a league fixture since the 6-3 defeat at Manchester City in October.
United have secured back-to-back wins since the Premier League’s return and next face Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.
