Liverpool set asking price for cult hero Nat Phillips

Liverpool have reportedly set an asking price of ยฃ15m for defender Nat Phillips with a number of Premier League clubs monitoring the centre-back.

Phillips established himself as something a cult hero for the Reds last season, rising to prominence during the club’s defensive injury crisis to produce a series of strong performances as Liverpool secured a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.

Despite the 24-year-old’s role, the return from injury of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip – alongside ยฃ35m signing of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig – mean opportunities are likely to be limited for Phillips next season.

The Athletic are reporting that Burnley are interested in signing the centre-back this summer, with the Reds having set an asking price of ยฃ15m for the defender, who signed on a free transfer from Bolton five years ago.

Burnley are close to finalising a ยฃ12m deal for Stoke City’s Nathan Collins, though that deal will not impact their pursuit of Phillips as the Clarets seek to strengthen their backline.

West Ham and Newcastle have also been tentatively linked with a move for the centre-back in recent weeks.

Phillips made 21 appearances across all competitions last season, having spent time on loan with Stuttgart in Germany’s second division during the 2019/20 campaign.
