Liverpool lodge offer for Saul with Man Utd interest ‘complicated’

Liverpool have reportedly made an offer for Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez as the club look to strengthen their midfield this summer.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been linked with a move for the Spain international who is keen to leave Atletico during the current transfer window, with Barcelona and Manchester United also credited as as potential suitors in recent weeks.

Reports had suggested that Atletico had been in discussions with Barcelona over a swap-deal involving the wantaway star and Antoine Griezmann, though Sport are reporting that talks over the transfer have stalled.

That news has alerted Liverpool who are now understood to have made a second offer for Saul, having seen an opening bid rejected by Atleti earlier in the window.

The bid is reported to be around €40m – a figure still below Atletico’s current valuation – though the Reds are hopeful of securing a deal by involving a player in part-exchange.

Xherdan Shaqiri has been touted as a makeweight with the Switzerland international likely to leave Liverpool this summer in search of regular first-team football and valued at around €15m.

However, a surprise name being linked is that of club captain Jordan Henderson, for who there has been little progress over contract talks at Anfield with the 31-year-old’s deal set to expire in 2023.

Henderson has been an integral part of the Reds’ recent successes, but the extension of his deal has fallen behind several other stars in terms of priority and Atletico, PSG and Arsenal are reportedly monitoring his situation.

However, Klopp will be loathed to lose the midfielder who has been a crucial component of his squad since arriving on Merseyside.

As for Manchester United‘s interest in Saul, that is described in the Sport article as the ‘most complicated’, with the Red Devils relatively well-stocked in midfield, though that could change if they decide to cash in on Paul Pogba, who is attracting the interest of PSG.
