Chelsea manager Frank Lampard insists it would be a ‘casual mistake’ to make his side favourites for this weekend’s clash with Newcastle.
Chelsea host Steve Bruce’s struggling side at Stamford Bridge this weekend, looking to continue their recent form following back-to-back wins prior to the international break.
By contrast, Newcastle have won just twice in the Premier League so far this season and sit just one point outside of the division’s bottom three, though having seen the Magpies beat Manchester United last time out Lampard has urged his side not to underestimate this weekend’s opponents.
“It would be easy to look at us as favourites, it would be a casual mistake for us to make that a story,” the Chelsea boss said at his pre-match press conference.
“We have to control what we can control, can we create chances and to make sure that we are at our best.”
Lampard pointed to Newcastle’s impressive win at Tottenham earlier this season to highlight the dangers posed by Saturday’s visitors, and has warned his side of the threat the North East side pose on the counter-attack.
“I saw that at Tottenham earlier in the season put in a similar show of resilience, organisation and counter-attacking football,” Lampard added.
“Whether they do exactly that who knows? But they have templates for getting results against teams in that way, so I’ll only see them at their best in terms of how we prepare.”
