Derby County boss Frank Lampard has said that Mason Mount has the potential to be ‘very special’.
Mount only joined Derby County last summer on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea, but has already made a massive impression on the Championship, starting all 15 games to date, scoring three goals.
He has long been heralded as one of the best prospects in the Chelsea Academy, with his performances for the Rams earning him a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s most recent England squad, irrespective of the fact he has never played a single minute of Premier League football.
With Lampard and Mount preparing to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, Blues legend and all-time leading goalscorer Lampard has been effusive in his praise of the youngster, describing him as ‘outstanding’
“He can be very special,” Lampard told a press conference ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge.
“Those things are always easier to say after the event, like I did about Hazard, I don’t want to heap pressure on Mason.
“All the signs are there in terms of quality, talent and work rate. Even if he’s having a game when he can’t always be affecting everything with the ball, his work rate is outstanding.
“That’s what sets him out as a young player, he’ll improve, he’s only 19. It’s a great test for him to go up against Chelsea.”
Derby have been given dispensation for Mount and fellow Chelsea loanee Fikayo Tomori to play against their parent club.
