Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe is set to tell the club he will not be renewing his current deal, amid long-standing interest from Real Madrid.
The 22-year-old has sparked intense speculation over his future due to his ongoing contract situation, the player’s existing deal set to expire in just under 12 months time.
That has left Paris Saint-Germain faced with the prospect of losing arguably their star asset for nothing next summer, having previously forked out £163m to prize him from Monaco back in 2017.
The World Cup winner – who has netted a staggering 132 goals in just 171 games for the club in all competitions – has long been rumoured to be keen on a move to the Bernabeu, with club president Florentino Perez seemingly desperate to bring the player to the Spanish capital.
The La Liga side’s hopes of signing the Frenchman look to have improved, however, with Marca reporting that the forward is set to inform PSG that he won’t sign a new deal to remain at the club.
The report suggests that while Mbappe is not going to force through a move this summer out of respect for the Parisian club, he seemingly has no plans to stay in France beyond the expiry of his contract in June 2022.
That scenario would likely benefit a cash-strapped Madrid, the club seemingly unlikely to be able to afford the hefty fee that it would take to prize the player this summer.
Aside from Madrid, the availability of a top talent such as Mbappe is likely to spark widespread interest, with the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea all linked with a forward in recent months, while Liverpool have long been linked with the Frenchman.
As for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, the loss of such a talent will no doubt be a huge blow, not least to their hopes of securing a first Champions League triumph.
That being said, the club have a strong chance of European success this season, having made significant moves in the transfer market, bringing in Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi and former Liverpool man Gini Wijnaldum.
Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is also said to be in talks over a potential switch to the Ligue 1 side, the player another who has just 12 months remaining on his existing deal.
