Jurgen Klopp has claimed that Liverpool fans would pick winning the Premier League over the Champions League if they had a choice.
The Reds have not won a league title for 29 years, an enormous length of time to go without winning the top prize in English football for the country’s second most successful club.
The wait could be ended this season however, as Liverpool sit joint top of the Premier League with Manchester City, who have a better goal differential as things stand.
There is also the small matter of the Champions League to contend with in the meantime, as the Merseyside outfit contend with a home tie against German giants Bayern Munich.
Ahead of the game Klopp made the bold claim that Liverpool fans would prefer to win the league rather than go the distance in Europe.
“We take it game by game. We can’t think about [Manchester] United. We are a really strong side and that is what we have to show,’’ Klopp told his pre-match press conference.
“It’s difficult for me to answer the question but for all Liverpool fans it’s the Premier League. That’s clear.
“But for now it’s the Champions League and we have to do our best tomorrow. Thank God we don’t have to decide that right now.”
Of course, it’s an unfair question to ask of the man in charge of Liverpool’s title challenge, and there are sure to be fans who would gladly take European glory if nothing else at the end of this season.
