Michael Carrick has insisted that Manchester United were the ‘better team’ during the club’s 4-4 draw with Aston Villa.
Manchester United needed two goals in added time to rescue a point against Aston Villa, who held 2-0 and 4-2 leads during a dramatic Premier League game.
Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu both scored in stoppage time to ultimately prevent defeat, and Carrick believes his side more than deserved the point. Reflecting on the result, which meant his side equalled an unwanted club record of eight games without a win in the Premier League, Carrick said he was pleased with a lot of the performance.
He bemoaned the ‘individual mistakes’ that cost his side, who he felt edged the overall play. Speaking to Match of the Day, Carrick said United had ‘made it hard’ for themselves once again.
“Making it hard for ourselves. Again, I thought a lot of the performances were very good,” he said.
“We made it challenging for ourselves. Mistakes that the boss knows shouldn’t happen. We built our way back into the game and played well, we probably should score more than we did today. The goals are coming from individual mistakes. We need to tighten up.
“I thought we were the better team. We played some very good football and got back into the game. Two goals again put us on the back foot. In the end, we could have even won it.
