‘He barely touched him’: Penders slams Sunderland penalty decision as Chelsea crash to defeat

Mike Penders has criticised the decision to award Sunderland a penalty after Chelsea lost 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Mike Penders has criticised the decision to award Sunderland a penalty after Chelsea lost 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Enzo Le Fee scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot, after Brian Brobbey tangled with Levi Colwill. Chelsea were frustrated by the decision, with protests that both players had held each other. The West Londoners had also had a penalty appeal of their own turned down when Cole Palmer went over under a challenge from Luke O’Nien.

Speaking to Sky Sports at full-time, Chelsea goalkeeper Penders expressed his disappointment at the results and refereeing decisions.

You know when you come here in this stadium it will be a difficult game and that was the matter tonight,” he said.

“We knew it would be tough, we are disappointed we lost the game. At one point it went very fast from side to side. Sometimes we had to control.

“With 11 behind the ball it is difficult to find the spaces.

“How you do – good or not – it is a matter of staying together. The international break is coming so the lads can be calm in the head and when we all come back we need to be motivated to go again.

“For me it wasn’t a penalty. He barely touched him, I think it was the other way round. He grabbed him.”
