Klopp admits he was 'worried' over season being scrapped

Jurgen Klopp has admitted he was ‘worried’ about the prospect of the season being scrapped as Liverpool prepare to return to action behind-closed-doors this weekend.

Liverpool make the short journey to face rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday evening, with the league leaders needing just two more victories to seal a first league title in three decades.

The unprecedented suspension of the season amid the global pandemic led to much uncertainty and raised the prospect of curtailment, with Ligue 1 and the Eredivisie amongst the major European leagues to have prematurely ended their seasons.

Klopp admits he was ‘worried’ about English football following suit with his side on the brink of being crowned champions, but is now delighted his side have been presented with the opportunity to clinch the Premier League title in the coming weeks.

“When we went to lockdown I didn’t think about us being close for a second as it was not important in the moment,” Klopp said at his pre-match press conference. “I became worried when people said ‘null and void’. I felt it physically.

“That would have been really hard. We were really happy when it was decided we could play again.

“There were moments but when that was off the table I felt quite relieved. Now we are here. If we would have done points per game we would have been champions but now we are not and have to play for it, which is how it should be in sports.

“It will be tough in the next few weeks. I hope I can enjoy it. We need to make sure we play again the best football we can play.”
