Chelsea have seen a bid worth £85m for Romelu Lukaku rejected by Inter Milan as the west London side step up their pursuit of the centre-forward.
Thomas Tuchel wants to re-sign the former Chelsea forward as he seeks to overhaul his attacking options and the Blues have seen a huge offer – that included defender Marcos Alonso heading to Inter in part-exchange – turned down by the Italian champions.
Chelsea had hoped to capitalise on Inter’s financial situation with the club needing to raise funds and reduce their wage bill to combat debts, but Sky Sports are reporting that their offer has been deemed not good enough to tempt the Serie A side into a sale.
Lukaku has been a key figure for the Nerazzurri since signing from Manchester United two seasons ago, with the Belgium international named as Serie A’s Most Valuable Player after firing Inter to title success in 2020/21.
The 28-year-old scored 24 league goals and provided a further 11 assists, whilst he became the fastest player in the club’s history to reach 50 goals across all competitions.
The forward is understood to be happy at the San Siro and concentrated on another successful season, despite the transfer interest from his former club.
Lukaku signed for Chelsea as a teenager for Anderlecht but made just 15 goalless appearances for the club, spending time on loan with West Brom and Everton before a permanent £28m move to the latter in 2014.
