Guardiola expecting response from Southampton’s ‘incredible professionals’ following Leicester mauling

Pep Guardiola has described Southampton as ‘incredible professionals’ and won’t be taking them lightly when his Man City side face them in the Carabao Cup this evening.

Southampton were on the end of the biggest ever Premier League home defeat on Friday night, being mauled 9-0 by Brendan Rodgers Foxes at St. Marys.

Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side seemed to down tools once they went 1-0 down and were reduced to 10 men in the opening minutes of the match, and face the unenviable task of back-to-back away games against Man City as they look to bounce back to winning ways.

Despite the Saints’ capitulation on the South Coast, Pep Guardiola isn’t expecting an easy ride when his side play them at the Etihad on Tuesday evening, and again on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s not easy but they are incredible professionals,” Guardiola said in his pre-match press conference.

“The manager will be sad for a moment – for one night – but after that, they have to move forward.

“We know the team Leicester are; it was not easy. But it’s different competitions – the Carabao Cup and the Premier League. And we will try [to prepare] to face good teams.”

“I am not going to judge them on that or prepare to play against them based on what happened against Leicester,” added Guardiola.

“They will try to do their best.”
