Manchester United midfielder Fred has opened up on the impact of Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford and how the marquee arrival has helped inspire the club’s recent resurgence.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were enjoying an upturn in form prior to the suspension of football amid the coronavirus crisis, Man Utd registering an 11-game unbeaten run in all competitions and progressing to the latter stages of both the FA Cup and Europa League.
That strong run of form also included nine clean sheets as the Red Devils noticeably improved defensively, and Fred admits his side were ‘going through a very good phase’ prior to the unprecedented halt of the season.
“We were going through a very good phase,” Fred told Trivela. “We were in a growing phase. We were doing very well in the Premier League, very well in the Europa League. We would have a chance to be champions (of the Europa League) before the stop.
“But I believe that our group got together a lot [more] at the end, we started helping each other with a different view of the game and we grew up on the pitch.
“We started to get better together, and Bruno Fernandes’ arrival was important for us, giving a calm change to our midfield. But we must also give credit to Ole and to our entire group, because we were on a very, very good rise.”
Fernandes has made a huge impression at Old Trafford since his mid-season arrival from Sporting Lisbon, scoring three goals and providing a further four assists to hit the ground running in English football.
The presence of the Portuguese international has lifted the performances of Solskjaer’s side and Fred – who has quickly developed a promising partnership with the 25-year-old in midfield – believes Fernandes can act as an ‘inspiration’ for the rest of the side to follow.
“Bruno Fernandes is a very important player, he arrived and gave an ‘up’ in our squad,” Fred added.
“He is a player with a lot of ambition but I believe that every player who plays for Manchester United needs to have this ambition to want to win, to be victorious, because it is a gigantic club.
“We always have to think about the titles, the victories. He arrived very well, helped us a lot and, for sure, he is an inspiration to be followed. I’m sure he will still grow a lot within United.”
