Ranking the five favourites to sign Declan Rice this summer

Declan Rice continues to be linked with the Premier League’s leading clubs with the midfielder’s performances at West Ham attracting attention.

The England international has enjoyed a fine individual season for the Hammers in 2020/21, captaining the side for much of the campaign as West Ham secured their highest league finish for 22 years and a record Premier League points total.

Rice is understood to be in no rush to leave the London Stadium with Europa League qualification secured for next season, though some strong performances at this summer’s European Championship could spark a bidding war for his services.

Liverpool – 18/1

Liverpool have been priced as 18/1 outsiders to secure Rice’s signing this summer, with perhaps only clubs amongst the Premier League’s ‘big six’ possessing the finances and status to prise him from the capital.

Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered a disappointing campaign after last season’s title success and will enter the market for reinforcements this summer, with a midfielder believed to be on the Reds’ radar as Georginio Wijnaldum prepares to leave on a free transfer.

Doubts also remain over the futures of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, though it appears unlikely that Liverpool will move for Rice given his preference for the holding role currently occupied by Fabinho.

Rice has thrived in a two-man midfield with Tomas Soucek this season and has shown an increased willingness to push forward, but whether he stylistically matches the midfielder Liverpool will target remains to be seen.

Arsenal – 11/1

Arsenal are another side linked with signing midfield additions, the Gunners amongst a collection of clubs – including Liverpool – believed to be monitoring Brighton’s Yves Bissouma.

Mikel Arteta signed Thomas Partey in a big-money deal from Atletico Madrid last summer and is keen to find a suitable partner for the Ghana international, as loanee Dani Ceballos prepares to return to Real Madrid and doubts persist over Granit Xhaka’s future.

Signing Rice would provide the north Londoners with another imposing and energetic presence in the engine room alongside Partey, though the star’s valuation appears out of reach for an Arsenal side who will need to sell in order to raise significant funds.

Manchester City – 10/1

Pep Guardiola labelled Rice as a ‘fantastic player’ ahead of a meeting between Manchester City and West Ham earlier this year, raising speculation the Premier League champions could harbour an interest in the midfielder.

Guardiola has received criticism this week after opting against using a holding midfielder for the club’s Champions League final defeat to Chelsea, raising doubts over his faith in Rodri and an ageing Fernandino.

The latter has signed a new deal and has impressed in a bit-part role on occasion this season, but at 36 is entering what will likely be his final season at the Etihad.

Rice would represent a fine long-term replacement for the Brazilian, if City can make an offer that West Ham find too good to refuse.

Manchester United – 4/1

Manchester United are in the market for a defensive midfielder this summer as Ole Gunnar Solskajer looks to reinforce the spine of his side, the Norwegian having often fielded a two-man pivot of Fred and Scott McTominay to cover his side’s weaknesses.

The signing of an elite defensive-minded midfielder could provide the security required to include another creative talent, providing the Red Devils with another option when it comes to breaking down deep-lying opposition.

The two teams are also expected to open talks over a potential permanent deal for Jesse Lingard, who thrived during a loan spell at the London Stadium over the second half of last season.

Lingard could prove an ideal makeweight in discussions over a deal for Rice, with the Hammers set to demand a huge fee for their prized asset.

Chelsea – 7/2

Chelsea are regarded as 7/2 favourites to sign Rice from West Ham this summer, having previously allowed the midfielder to leave their academy system as a teenager.

The west Londoners were linked strongly with Rice during Frank Lampard’s reign at Stamford Bridge, with speculation suggesting the Blues viewed the 22-year-old’s long-term future at centre-back.

Rice’s versatility could prove invaluable to a side set to compete on multiple fronts next season, the newly-crowned European champions gearing up for an assault on the Premier League title, with funds expected to be made available to Thomas Tuchel.

Rice could be tempted by a return to Chelsea, where he would join a home-grown core alongside England teammates Reece James, Ben Chilwell and long-term friend Mason Mount.
