The fastest players to 20 Premier League away goals

Erling Haaland has broken Premier League goal records on an almost weekly basis since stepping into the division, with no milestone appearing safe from the Manchester City goal machine.

Haaland hit a brace as Manchester City thrashed cross-town neighbours Manchester United in the Premier League at the weekend, a double which took the Norwegian to 20 away goals in the Premier League, scored in less than 18 months.

Unsurprisingly, it’s another record the 23-year-old has claimed, but which players make up the top five fastest to 20 away goals in the Premier League?

The fastest players to 20 Premier League away goals:

5. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (33 appearances)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s time in the Premier League might have ended on a sour note, but for a short time the Gabonese goal-getter was one of the division’s premier marksmen. Aubameyang signed for Arsenal in a club-record deal from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018 and immediately hit the ground running on English football, with 10 goals in his first 13 Premier League appearances.

The forward’s first full season saw Aubameyang score 22 league goals in 2018/19 to win a share of the Golden Boot, in a three-way African tie for the award alongside Liverpool pair Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Aubameyang reached the 20 away goal milestone in 33 appearances on the road for Arsenal. Only three players have ever done so quicker.

4. Diego Costa (33 appearances)

Diego Costa can match Aubameyang’s record of 20 away goals in 33 appearances, having made an instant impact after signing for Chelsea from Atletico Madrid. Jose Mourinho’s search for a focal point saw the Blues sign the Spanish snarler, whose mix of aggression and anticipation saw him fire Chelsea to the title in his debut campaign.

Costa scored 52 goals in 89 league appearances across three seasons at Stamford Bridge, breaking the 20-goal barrier in title-winning seasons in 2014/15 and 2016/17. His goal-per-game ratio is the best from any Chelsea player to score 50+ goals for the club in the Premier League.

3. Ian Wright (31 appearances)

Ian Wright raced to 20 away goals in the Premier League, hitting the landmark in just 31 appearances. Wright had won the First Division Golden Boot in the final pre-Premier League campaign, before scoring prolifically for Arsenal during the early seasons of the relaunched top-flight.

The former England forward scored 30+ goals in all competitions in four consecutive campaigns between 1991/92 and 1994/95 and departed Arsenal as the club’s all-time record goalscorer in 1998.

Thierry Henry later eclipsed Wright’s record, but he remains one of the Gunners’ greatest.

2. Kevin Phillips (28 appearances)

Kevin Phillips’ ranks second on this list, having taken 28 away games to reach 20 goals.

His first season in the Premier League proved an unforgettable one, as the Sunderland striker took the top division by storm. Phillips had fired the Black Cats back into the big time after 23 goals in the second tier, before exploding on English football’s biggest stage.

Phillips scored a staggering 30 goals in the Premier League during the 1999/2000 season to win both the Golden Boot and the European Golden Shoe. He remains the only Englishman to have won the latter award, after a season in which Phillips spearheaded Sunderland’s run to a seventh-place finish under Peter Reid.

1. Erling Haaland (23 appearances)

Last weekend’s Manchester Derby win was just another day at the office for Erling Haaland.

Two goals took the Norwegian to 11 in the Premier League this season, extending an astonishing record in English football since signing for Manchester City.

Haaland has now scored 47 goals in just 45 appearances in the Premier League, with the fastest footballer to a half-century another record the 23-year-old is fast closing in on.

Expect more records to tumble as the season progresses, for a forward ripping up what was previously deemed possible.
