Fantasy Premier League: The best time to use your remaining chips in FPL

Fantasy Premier League is about the enter the run-in, which is when your chips are at their most valuable.

Gameweek 34 has been confirmed as a double gameweek, with seven teams playing twice while Tottenham Hotspur will not play at all that week.

If you’ve been patient and smart, you will still have some of your FPL chips in your back pocket, ready to use them in these DGWs to maximise your returns.

We will run through when is the best time to use the second Wildcard (WC), Triple Captain (TC), Bench Boost (BB) and Free Hit (FH) before the end of the season.

FPL GW30 Deadline: Saturday, March 30, 11:00 am GMT.

Fantasy Premier League: When to use your remaining FPL chips

Wildcard

Once the double gameweeks were announced many FPL managers activated their WC immediately. Whether you choose to follow suit is dependent on what your team looks like.

Wildcarding ahead of the GW30 deadline means you can get rid of one or two of your Arsenal assets (read: defenders) before they face Man City, and Spurs assets who blank in GW34. You can then load up on players who play twice in GW34 (and bring back in the Gunners with free transfers later).

There is always a risk attached with getting rid of top quality picks so many weeks ahead of a DGW, though.

Those who wildcard in GW31 won’t have a vastly different side than those who went a week earlier, but it means you can keep Spurs players for Luton at home this weekend. The issue is that you only have two days to pick your team before the deadline.

The problem with wildcarding after this point is that the teams who double in GW34 do not double in GW37, so you might as well wait until GW35 or GW36 if your plan is to BB in GW37.

Bench Boost

There are two very clear options here: GW34 or GW37. You can, of course, BB in a single gameweek, but you will get more bang for your buck in a DGW.

Spurs blanking in GW34 complicates matters a tad, as many FPL managers will have at least one Tottenham player if not more. So you either WC them out now to use the BB in GW34, or keep them in order to activate it in GW37.

Free Hit

A large proportion of FPL managers will have used this chip in GW26 or GW29, but those of you who planned ahead still have it in your possession. You either got a little bit lucky with the players you already had or used the WC before GW29.

GW34 may be the ideal time to activate this chip, especially with Spurs not playing that week. GW37 is a strong alternative, although it very much depends on if you have your TC and when you plan to use it. GW38 is another fun option, but you are at the mercy of final day rotation.

Triple Captain

If you didn’t use your TC on Erling Haaland in GW25 or Dominic Solanke in GW28, then you’re probably feeling pretty smug right now. Despite the very attractive fixtures, neither players delivered the goods we expected.

GW34 offers a couple of options for the TC chip, with Liverpool and Mo Salah facing Fulham and Everton, although both games are away. Arsenal travel to Wolves before hosting Chelsea, so Bukayo Saka wouldn’t be a bad shout.

There will be more double gameweeks towards the end of the season. Chelsea and Spurs are expected to double in either GW35 or GW36, and again in GW37 alongside Brighton, Man City, Man United, and Newcastle United.

Son Heung-min would be a great option for either DGW, while Cole Palmer would be a cheeky shout for the TC. Oh, and Haaland of course.
