Real Madrid have reignited their interest in Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, after Zinedine Zidane returned to the club as manager.
The 28-year-old has long been linked with a move to the Spanish capital, but appeared set to stay at Old Trafford following Zidane’s departure last summer and Madrid’s subsequent signing of Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
After a disappointing season, Zidane returned to the Bernabeu this week after Santiago Solari’s dismissal, and according to the Mirror has revived his interest in De Gea having been left unconvinced by current number one Courtois.
Real are set for significant investment this summer, with Zidane set to be backed heavily as he looks to rebuild an ageing squad. The Spanish giants saw their hopes of a fourth consecutive Champions League ended with a humbling defeat to Ajax last week, and president Florentino Perez is ready to back Zidane as he bids to revitalise the club.
Zidane has been linked with a raid on the Premier League for Chelsea duo Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante, and could be set for a third swoop with another approach for United goalkeeper De Gea.
The former Atletico Madrid stopper’s deal is set to expire in 2020 after United triggered a one-year extension, and Real believe after a lengthy pursuit they will finally land their man in a £75m this summer.
