David Luiz looks set to leave Arsenal on a free transfer this summer with ‘no contract extension talks planned’ for the defender.
The Brazilian international moved to the Emirates in an £8m deadline day deal from Chelsea last summer, the veteran centre-back signing a one-year deal despite widespread reports of a two-year contract.
Luiz has been regular in the first-team so far this season with the 33-year-old making 32 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners, though despite the wishes of head coach Mikel Arteta to keep the experienced centre-back at the club, he looks set to depart after just a single season.
According to Sky Sports, there are no plans to extend the contract of Luiz ahead of next season, with youngster William Saliba – who signed in a £27m deal last summer before spending the season on-loan at Saint-Étienne – set to replace the star amongst Arteta’s defensive options.
Arsenal‘s likely continued absence from the Champions League and the financial squeeze of the coronavirus pandemic is set to see the club cut costs, Luiz heading towards the exit door despite being a virtual ever-present since Arteta’s appointment in December.
The defender hinted earlier this month on where his future may lie beyond the end of the season, revealing his ambitions to finish his career in Portuguese football with former side Benfica.
