Chelsea are prepared to make an offer in excess of £90m to Inter Milan in a bid to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge.
Thomas Tuchel has made the signing of a new centre-forward a priority for Chelsea this summer and has shortlisted a host of leading names, with Lukaku having emerged as a more viable option than Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland.
Haaland is being courted by almost every major club in European football – including Manchester City – following his performances for Dortmund so far this season and The Sun are reporting the west Londoners are now turning their attentions to Lukaku.
Timo Werner has struggled during his debut season since signing from RB Leipzig last summer and uncertainty continues to surround the futures of Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud at Chelsea, the club understood to be prepared to invest heavily in the signing of a new number nine.
Chelsea are reportedly willing to bid in excess of £90m to sign Lukaku this summer, a player who initially signed for the club as a teenager in 2011 before moving on in search of regular first-team football.
Lukaku scored prolifically during Premier League loans at West Brom and Everton before signing for the latter on a permanent basis, his performances earning a £75m move to Manchester United where he scored 42 goals in just 96 appearances.
The 27-year-old’s performances have reached a new level since signing for Inter Milan in 2019, becoming the fastest player in the club’s history to reach 50 goals in all competitions and netting 61 times in just 91 appearances for the Italian side.
Lukaku’s goals have helped propel Inter to the verge of a first league title in more than a decade, with Antonio Conte’s side currently 11 points clear of nearest challengers Atalanta with just five games of the Serie A season remaining.
