Abraham says he is ‘ready’ to be Chelsea’s new number nine

Tammy Abraham has suggested he is in line to wear the number nine shirt for Chelsea this season.

The 21-year-old has returned to Stamford Bridge this summer following an impressive loan spell at Aston Villa last season, where the forward scored 26 goals to help fire the Midlands side to promotion.

Abraham is now seeking to make his breakthrough at Chelsea under new manager Frank Lampard, with the Blues’ boss having shown his faith in the two-cap England international by offering him the number nine shirt for their 2-1 win over Barcelona.

“I am honoured to wear the number nine shirt at Chelsea,” Abraham told reporters in Japan.

“I spoke to the manager and he asked me if I am ready to take the number nine. I said I am ready.

“I’m glad he offered it to me. I’ve heard all the rubbish about the number nine, but I’m here to play my game and do my best.

“Football brings a lot of pressure. It drives me on. It gives me the extra belief. It was my first goal in a Chelsea shirt and now that’s out of the way it will be nice to push on and score some more.”

The club are yet to officially announce the squad numbers for next season, with Willian recently suggesting he will become the clubs new number 10 following the departure of Eden Hazard.
