Lampard says he has ‘full confidence’ in Tammy Abraham

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard says he has ‘full confidence’ in returning loanee Tammy Abraham, saying the forward is ‘hungry’ to score goals for the club next season.

Abraham has returned to Stamford Bridge after a prolific loan spell at Aston Villa, with the 21-year-old scoring 26 goals as the Midlands club secured promotion back to the Premier League.

The forward is expected to be given an opportunity under Lampard this season, and scored in Chelsea‘s 2-1 pre-season win over La Liga champions Barcelona on Tuesday, with the Blues boss revealing Abraham is ‘hungry for goals’ as he bids to establish himself in the first-team.

“I’m very happy this evening. Tammy is a goalscorer, hungry for goals, constantly wanting to score,” Lampard said following the win in Saitama.

“I saw that in the Championship last season, he’s proven that and now it’s his time to prove it at Chelsea. Confidence is big for goalscorers so to get his goal will put him in good stead.

“Olivier Giroud came on and did very well as well. He showed his different style and attributes he brings, and the same for Batshuayi. There’s competition.

“People keep talking a lot about it and they all need to rise to the competition and show they can be strikers for Chelsea. I’ve got full confidence in them and it’s great for Tammy.”

The comments will however come as a blow to Villa fans though, who were hoping to see Abraham return to the Midlands club this summer, although it seems increasingly likely he is set to stay in West London.
