Newcastle United host Everton at St James’ Park on Monday night, just four days after the sides met in the EFL Cup.
Matthias Jaissle’s side were beaten 3-1 by Everton in that fourth-round tie, a result that marked a third defeat in four matches across all competitions, but they bounced back in the league with a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace to sit one point above Monday’s visitors. Newcastle’s home form remains a concern, however, with just one win from four Premier League matches at St James’ Park this season and no clean sheet there in any competition. Everton have won three of their last four meetings with Newcastle, who have beaten the Toffees just once in their last seven attempts, a 4-1 victory at Hill Dickinson Stadium last November.
Newcastle United team news
Tino Livramento and Ewen Jaouen remain unavailable through injury, while Matias Fernandez-Pardo, Will Osula and Lewis Miley are all doubts. Osula twisted his ankle before being withdrawn during the EFL Cup defeat, and Yoane Wissa looks set to deputise up front if the forward is unable to recover in time. James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry all scored for Everton in Thursday’s defeat, with Dan Burn’s late response proving only a consolation. No further fitness concerns have been reported elsewhere in Jaissle’s squad.
Jaissle made a triple change with his side 2-0 down in midweek, and Joelinton could replace Jacob Ramsey in central midfield having been used as one of three changes against Everton. Of the Premier League’s top-half teams, only Chelsea have conceded more than Newcastle’s 14 goals across the opening eight rounds.
