Everton travel to St James’ Park on Monday night, four days after beating Newcastle United in the EFL Cup.
David Moyes’s side won 3-1 in that fourth-round tie, James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry all scoring before Dan Burn’s late consolation, and have now won three of their last four meetings with Newcastle. Everton have lost their last two matches without scoring, however, including a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal, and remain without a Premier League away win this season. Everton have drawn three and lost one of their opening four Premier League away matches this season, leaving them still searching for a first victory on the road.
Everton team news
Everton have no injury absentees heading into Monday’s match. Jack Grealish’s involvement remains uncertain after he was omitted from the squad in midweek for allegedly missing a training session, with Moyes yet to confirm whether the forward will return. Jarrad Branthwaite is working through concussion protocols, but Moyes is confident the defender will be available in time for kick-off. Newcastle have failed to keep a clean sheet at St James’ Park in any competition this season, a statistic that should offer encouragement to Everton’s attack. No further fitness concerns have been reported elsewhere in Moyes’s squad.
Brennan Johnson and Tyrique George took the wide roles in Grealish’s absence against Arsenal, though with Johnson yet to justify his inclusion, Tyler Dibling could be handed a belated Premier League start having impressed in the cup win over Newcastle. Hackney’s goal and assist against Newcastle in midweek further strengthened his case to retain his starting spot in central midfield. Either Merlin Rohl or Jake O’Brien may make way if Branthwaite is passed fit.
Everton predicted lineup
Everton possible starting XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Rohl, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Hackney, Garner; Dibling, Dewsbury-Hall, George; Barry
