Chelsea swoop for Ivan Toney as £97m transfer flop nears exit

Chelsea are making a late push to sign Ivan Toney ahead of transfer deadline day.

The Brentford striker is expected to leave the club before the window closes on Friday, 30 August, after being omitted from the matchday in both of their opening Premier League fixtures.

The Blues, meanwhile, are keen on signing a number nine with a proven goalscoring record after signing 11 new players this summer.

That’s why Chelsea have ‘made a move’ for Toney, who they will only sign if a deal can be done for a ‘reasonable’ transfer fee and doesn’t break their wage structure, according to Sky Sports News.

The 28-year-old is also said to have an ‘extremely lucrative’ offer on the table from Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ahli.

Toney, who has just one year left on his contract, has scored 36 goals in 85 Premier League appearances for the Bees.

A move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has not been ruled, but Chelsea may be priced out of completing a deal for the Nigeria international.

Romelu Lukaku is expected to join the Serie A side this week regardless of what happens to Osimhen.

Issues over the centre-forward’s image rights with Napoli have been ‘resolved’, paving the way for the Belgian to finally leave Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are expected to receive a £25.3m (€30m) transfer fee, with a medical due to take place on Wednesday.

Lukaku returned to Chelsea in 2021, moving from Inter Milan in a deal worth £97.5m. However, he failed to make an impact during his second spell at the club, scoring just eight goals in 26 Premier League appearances.
