Chelsea and Inter ‘locked in talks’ over Lukaku transfer with agreement expected

Chelsea and Inter Milan remain ‘locked in talks’ as the two clubs seek to agree a deal for the transfer of Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea have seen an opening offer for the Belgium international rejected by the Italian champions, their initial proposal believed to be a fee of £85m plus defender Marcos Alonso.

The west London side are understood to be prepared to make the 28-year-old the most expensive player in Premier League history, with a fee potentially eclipsing the £100m deal that took Jack Grealish from Aston Villa to Manchester City this week.

Sky Sports are reporting that the two clubs remain ‘locked in talks’, with Inter preferring a cash-only deal paid in instalments, while Chelsea hope to include players as part of the package to bring former forward Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge.

Talks between the two teams today will attempt to find a compromise with Matt Law of The Telegraph saying that there is an expectation in both England and Italy that an agreement will eventually be found.

Lukaku has enjoyed the best period of his career since signing for Inter from Manchester United two seasons ago, scoring 64 goals in just 95 appearances across all competitions.

The forward was named as Serie A’s Most Valuable Player after firing the Nerazzurri to title success last season and whilst he remains content at the San Siro, is open to the idea of returning to Chelsea.

Lukaku signed for Chelsea as a teenager from Anderlecht but made just 15 goalless appearances, spending time on loan with West Brom and Everton before a permanent switch to the latter in 2014.

It has been reported that Manchester United would be owed around five per cent of any transfer fee as part of the deal that took him to the San Siro.
