Rudiger and Kante to hand Lampard a welcome injury boost

Chelsea will be handed a welcome injury boost as Antonio Rudiger and N’Golo Kante prepare to return ahead of this weekend’s clash with Newcastle.

Rudiger has struggled with injuries in recent times, with his latest problem a freak groin injury picked up in the 5-2 win at Wolves last month.

The 26-year-old slipped on a metal plate placed next to the touchline at Molyneux, his first appearance since returning from knee surgery in April, and has missed the club’s past six fixtures.

Rudiger’s return will be a welcome boost for Frank Lampard’s side, who saw fellow defender Andreas Christensen pick up a groin injury of his own while on international duty with Denmark.

According to the Sun, Rudiger is unlikely to start Saturday’s visit of Steve Bruce’s side but his return to fitness is a welcome boost and he could be available off the bench.

There was also positive news for Chelsea on N’Golo Kante’s fitness, the midfielder having returned to training with France after missing their crucial win in Iceland on Friday night.

Mateo Kovacic is a doubt, however, after the midfielder was forced off of the field during Croatia’s 1-1 draw with Wales with a knee injury following a challenge from Spurs‘ Ben Davies.
