There was a headline fixture in the Bundesliga on Saturday evening as defending champions Bayer Leverkusen travelled to face Bayern Munich.
Xabi Alonso’s team dethroned Bayern Munich last season to end an unprecedented period of dominance from the Bavarians, as Leverkusen completed the campaign unbeaten to win the Bundesliga for the first time and complete Germany’s first-ever unbeaten season.
Their showdown this weekend saw Bayern Munich left frustrated after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena.
Robert Andrich scored from range to give the visitors a first-half lead, but it didn’t last long as Aleksandar Pavlovic fired a stunning strike into the net for the equaliser soon after.
Harry Kane was subbed off late on with an injury, making him a doubt for their Champions League clash with Aston Villa next week. Vincent Kompany’s side remain top of the standings despite dropping points for the first time this season.
Elsewhere in Germany, Leipzig ran out comfortable 4-0 winners against Augsburg at home to leapfrog Leverkusen into second in the table. Wolfsburg drew 2-2 with Stuttgart, while St Pauli picked up their first win since promotion by beating Freiburg 3-0 on the road.
On Friday, Borussia Dortmund bounced back from last week’s 5-1 hammering by Stuttgart to beat strugglers Bochum 4-2 at home.
