Steve Bruce believes his Newcastle side have ‘got it in them’ to trouble Liverpool when they travel to face the European champions this weekend.
Newcastle head to Anfield on Saturday lunchtime looking for a first win at the famous ground in 24 years, having not won on Merseyside since a League Cup victory in 1995.
League leaders Liverpool have begun the new season in impressive fashion with four consecutive wins, whilst they are currently on a run of 42 Premier League games unbeaten at home, having not lost at Anfield since a 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in April 2017.
Despite the daunting task facing the Magpies this weekend, Bruce believes his side can achieve a result and pointed to their victory at Tottenham earlier this season as evidence they can compete with the division’s best sides.
“We are going to the European champions and they are as good a team as you will ever play against, so we’ll have to defend well,” said Bruce.
“It’s always been a big fixture, and you want to go there and take them on. It’s what we’re in it for.
“The core of the squad have been together a couple of years and they’re a really honest and genuine group. When you’ve got that, you’re capable of doing anything.
“They’ve gone to Spurs and won and they beat Man City last year, so they’ve got it in them.”
