Dimitar Berbatov has revealed why he believes Manchester United should sign Victor Osimhen over Harry Kane this summer.
United want to sign a centre-forward this summer as Erik ten Hag looks to turn his team into title challengers and the Red Devils have been linked with big-money moves to sign Napoli’s Osimhen and Tottenham’s Kane.
Osimhen is the leading scorer in Serie A and has shone for the division’s runaway leaders this season, while Kane has had another prolific campaign for Spurs and recently became both the club’s and England’s all-time record goalscorer.
Kane will enter the final 12 months of his contract at Spurs at the end of the season and faces a decision on his future having failed to win team silverware in his career to date.
Berbatov – who left Spurs to sign for Manchester United in a £30.75m deal in 2008 – has given his view on his former side’s pursuit of Kane. The Bulgarian called Kane an ‘unbelievable’ player, but believes Osimhen would be a better long-term option at Old Trafford given the duo’s age.
“You cannot argue with the goalscoring record of Harry Kane,” Berbatov told Goal. “He is one of the best of his generation in how he scores goals, how he plays the game, how he sees the game. He’s unbelievable.
“But the one concern I have is that age, he is [almost] 30 so nobody’s getting any younger. And in my mind this is going to be a major concern if someone is going to buy him.
“When you say Spurs, the first thing on my mind is Harry Kane. So that legacy, it’s just too big for him to tarnish.
“It’s so difficult because you need someone who’s going to score goals, someone who’s going to be the right age so he can develop and get better and better and better.
“You have to use him for years to come and in my mind, that is Osimhen.
“This is the type of player I’d like to see for United.”
