Eric Bailly has ended speculation surrounding his future by signing a new contract at Manchester United.
Bailly’s contract was set to enter its final year this summer with several clubs having monitored the defender’s situation, leading sides in both Italy and Spain reported to have registered an interest in prising the Ivorian from Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old has endured a frustrating time since signing for the Red Devils from Villarreal in 2016, failing to make more than 20 appearances in a campaign since his maiden season in English football.
Despite his injury problems, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been keen to tie the player down to a new deal following some impressive performances this season and the club have now announced Bailly has signed a contract extension until 2024.
The centre-back has discussed his new deal and says his ‘love’ for the club made putting pen to paper an easy decision, outlining his intention to put his injury nightmare before him and earn a regular run in the side.
“I’m very happy,” he told club’s official website.
“This decision is something I didn’t have to think about, I love this club and I love playing for Manchester United. I’m happy and so are my family, everything is good. Now the moment with my injury has passed and I’m fit and feel good, and that’s it. A new contract is like a new challenge and I’m ready for this.”
Solskjaer also discussed his delight to see Bailly commit his future to the club, believing the defender has a ‘significant part’ to play in his squad after overcoming his injury struggles.
He said: “I am pleased that Eric has signed this new contract. He is still learning and improving all of the time under the coaches here.
“Eric has improved his robustness since my time as manager and he will continue to play a significant part in the squad.
“He possesses fantastic speed, timing of tackle and has that aggression which, of course, you need as a centre-back. He is a popular member of the squad and we look forward to continuing to work with him going forward.”
