Roy Keane has said Michael Carrick’s history with Manchester United should have no bearing on whether he continues to lead the club.
Carrick’s position as manager is under threat after a nine-game winless run in all competitions. United lost 2-0 at Chelsea in the Premier League this weekend and sit 17th in the table, outside the relegation places on goal difference. The club’s seven points from nine games is their worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign.
Keane has hit out at those who have backed Carrick due to his personality and ‘love’ of the club. He said that should have no bearing on his future, and that Carrick should not continue if the owners do not feel he is the right man to move forward. The Irishman added that the responsibility of the Manchester United owners is to appoint ‘the best-in-class manager’.
“If I hear one more person tell me he’s a great guy and he loves the club. What’s that got to do with it? This has nothing to do with his personality,” Keane said to The Overlap.
“Ultimately, you’ve got to get players to run for you. “We can all name a few managers who might be good options. That doesn’t mean it’s going to work out, but you still have to look at the best option.
“The owners have many responsibilities, but they have to appoint the best-in-class manager for Manchester United because the manager is the most important appointment at a football club. Fact.”
