Arsenal join the race to sign Premier League defender

Arsenal have joined the race to sign West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans.

The defender has attracted attention from both Manchester City and Leicester City so far in this transfer window, with West Brom rejecting a number of bids, with the latest thought to be around £21m from the Foxes.

Arsenal were interested in signing the former Manchester United central defender last summer but were unable to secure a deal, but according to The Telegraph, they have now rekindled their interest ahead of Thursday’s Transfer Deadline.

Arsenal are in need of a new centre back, with last summer’s £35 million signing Shkodran Mustafi set to complete a move to Inter Milan.

Manchester City are expected to return with a bid of £30m for the Northern Ireland international, an offer which West Brom are likely to accept. Interestingly, Evans is currently training at City’s training ground with his International team mates ahead of Friday’s World Cup qualifier in San Marino, and Monday’s fixture against Czech Republic back in Belfast.

It is speculated that Arsenal could use West Brom’s interest in Kieran Gibbs to try to beat off the competition for Evans’ signature.

Man City and Arsenal are also involved in negotiations regarding Alexis Sanchez, with City offering Raheem Sterling as part of a potential deal for the Chilean.
