Arsenal ‘close’ to Havertz agreement with Chelsea

Arsenal are close to reaching an agreement with Chelsea over the signing of Kai Havertz in a deal worth around £65million.

The two clubs have been in negotiations over a deal for Havertz, with the Germany international keen on a move across the capital to sign for Arsenal.

The Gunners saw an opening offer for Havertz turned down last week, but The Athletic are reporting that an agreement between the London rivals is now ‘close’.

Negotiations are ongoing over the structure of the transfer, with instalments and potential add-ons being discussed before a deal is finalised.

Chelsea are willing to let Havertz leave this summer after an underwhelming period in west London that has seen the 24-year-old score 32 goals in 139 appearances.

Havertz has failed to convince in a centre-forward position at Chelsea, but Arsenal are understood to view the German as an attacking midfield option, with flexibility to move into the forward line.

Havertz had thrived in a midfield position at former club Bayer Leverkusen, where he scored 29 league goals across his last two seasons in the Bundesliga before a £72m move to Stamford Bridge.

Havertz’s exit is set to form part of an exodus at Chelsea this summer, as the Blues look to reduce a bloated squad and meet Financial Fair Play regulations. N’Golo Kante has signed for Saudi Professional League club Al-Ittihad, while Manchester United are in talks over a deal for Mason Mount.

Edouard Mendy, Hakim Ziyech and Kalidou Koulibaly have also received proposals from Saudi Arabian sides.

Chelsea confirmed their first signing of the summer in RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku on Tuesday and are also interested in a deal for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo.
