Arsenal close to completing €50 million deal to bring Odegaard back

Arsenal are reportedly close to completing a €50m deal to bring Martin Odegaard back to the club from Real Madrid.

Odegaard spent the second half of last season on loan at the Emirates from Real Madrid and made a positive impression during his time with the club, with Arsenal having since been keen to secure the Norway international on a permanent basis.

AS are reporting that an agreement is nearing for Odegaard to return to Arsenal, having failed to convince Carlo Ancelotti since returning to the Spanish capital for pre-season.

The 22-year-old had hoped to establish himself in the new manager’s plans for the upcoming campaign, but has found himself behind a number of senior players amongst Ancelotti’s midfield options.

Arsenal had been linked with a move for James Maddison, though Fabrizio Romano is reporting that a deal for the Leicester midfielder has ‘never been close’, with the Foxes valuing the one cap England international at around £70 million.

Houssem Aouar has also been mentioned as a potential transfer target after Arsenal expressed interest in the Lyon midfielder last summer, but Odegaard has remained the leading target for technical director Edu and manager Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal are now understood to be awaiting the ‘green light’ from Real Madrid before submitting their proposal, with Odegaard closing in on a return to the Premier League as the Gunners seek to inject their midfielder with further creativity.

Odegaard made 20 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions last season, scoring twice and providing a further two assists.
