Injury blow for Chelsea as newboys Ziyech and Chilwell set to miss Premier League opener

Chelsea have suffered a double injury blow as new signings Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell look set to miss the club’s Premier League opener with Brighton on Monday.

The club recruited Moroccan playmaker Ziyech from Ajax towards the back end of last season after an impressive few years at the Amsterdam outfit – while England international Chilwell sealed his £50m move last month from top-flight rivals Leicester City.

Both men will have no doubt been looking forward to making an instant impression at Stamford Bridge, yet manager Frank Lampard will have do without two of his summer signings – as reported by the Daily Mail – in the first game of what should be a thoroughly exciting season.

The news of these injuries won’t necessarily have come as a surprise to Lampard and co, with left-back Chilwell still recovering from the heel problem that kept him out of the Foxes lineup in the latter stages of last season. As for Ziyech, the midfielder suffered a knee injury in a pre-season fixture with Monday’s opponents Brighton last week – and was forced off after just 54 minutes.

There will be some better news for the club however as fellow arrival Kai Havertz is in line for to feature against the Seagulls in what would be his first game for the club, while Christian Pulisic is also expected to be fit again having suffered a hamstring injury during Chelsea’s FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal.

Another man who could also make his Chelsea bow is centre-back acquisition Thiago Silva, who joined the club on a free transfer from PSG following the Ligue 1 side’s Champions League final defeat to Bayern Munich.
