Wolves bemoan ‘worst decision ever’ in West Ham defeat

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil was left fuming over what he called “the worst decision I have ever seen” during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham United in the Premier League.

Max Kilman thought he had scored a late equaliser after heading home from a corner at Molineux, but it was ruled out following a VAR check.

Referee Tony Harrington reviewed the goal on the pitchside monitor and determined that Tawanda Chirewa was standing in an offside position and blocking goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, meaning he was deemed to be interfering with play.

Wolves players and staff angrily remonstrated with the match official following the full-time whistle.

“I wasn’t able to control my emotion well enough to get an explanation,” said O’Neil in his post-match press conference.

“It was a terrible decision. They may come up with some explanation but I will never believe them.

“It is possibly the worst decision I have ever seen.”

Kilman, who also gave away a penalty in the second half following a handball, was equally puzzled by the decision to chalk off the goal.

“To be honest, I’ve never seen anything like it,” he told Sky Sports. “I’ve never seen a moment like this happen before. We are all absolutely gutted and we deserved something from that game.

“I haven’t watched it back but it was a clear header, the keeper couldn’t even see it, there was nothing he could do [to stop it].

“We knew in the second half it would be a different West Ham team coming out – we didn’t keep possession like we did in the first half and they did take their chances but it was really tough to take how it ended.

“We haven’t won in the last few games, we’ve got a few injuries but we’ve got great players, a really good group and we need to stay together as we’ve still got a few games to go to get some results and make sure we get as high up the table as we can.”
