David Moyes disagrees with Gary O’Neil over controversial VAR decision

David Moyes believes it was the “right decision” to disallow Max Kilman’s late goal for Wolves against West Ham United at Molineux on Saturday.

The English defender thought he had scored a late equaliser after heading home from a corner at Molineux, but a VAR review showed Tawanda Chirewa was standing in an offside position.

Referee Tony Harrington reviewed the goal on the pitchside monitor and determined that the winger was blocking Lukasz Fabianski, meaning he was deemed to be interfering with play.

Gary O’Neil called it “the worst decision I have ever seen” after the game, while Kilman argued that the goalkeeper would not have saved the header even if a Wolves player was not there.

Moyes was displeased with the general level of officiating on the day, in particular the decision to award Wolves a penalty in the first half, but didn’t quibble with the disallowed goal.

“I think nearly every decision today was a VAR call, we were all unhappy,” Moyes told BBC Match of the Day after the final whistle.

“We’re all pretty disappointed generally with a lot of the things going on. We’ve certainly had a terrible run of decisions – that last one might be one that’s gone in our favour but when I’ve seen it back, he’s definitely standing in front of the goalkeeper.

“I think it was probably the right decision but I can understand how Gary O’Neil would see as it as a very harsh call – but I thought the penalty kick in the first half was a really harsh call for us.”

Pablo Sarabia gave the Midlands outfit the lead from the spot in the 33rd minute after Rayan Ait-Nouri was felled in the box by Emerson Palmieri.

Lucas Paqueta cancelled it out with a penalty of his own following a handball from Kilman. James Ward-Prowse subsequently put West Ham in front with a sensational goal directly from a corner.
