Raphael Varane is keen to ‘stake a claim’ for Manchester United’s Premier League opener, with the defender set to undergo a medical today.
United‘s signing of the centre-back from Real Madrid has been delayed due to visa issues and quarantine rules, though the club hopefule Varane can complete his medical at some point on Tuesday.
Should the France international return a negative Covid-19 test and complete his medical as planned, he will officially sign his contract at Old Trafford on Wednesday morning and join first-team training.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side begin their Premier League campaign with a home clash against Leeds on Saturday lunchtime, and the Manchester Evening News are reporting that Varane is determined to ‘stake a claim’ for selection.
The 28-year-old wants to train with his new teammates on Wednesday and push for his place in the side this weekend.
United have until Friday at 12pm to complete the signing in order for Varane to be eligible for selection, though it remains to be seen whether Solskjaer is prepared to throw the new signing into immediate action.
Jadon Sancho trained individually at the club’s Carrington training ground this week and is in contention to make his debut following a £72.9m move from Borussia Dortmund.
