Manchester United and Manchester City have reportedly made formal contact with David Alaba over a potential move as the defender prepares to leave Bayern Munich.
Alaba has entered the final months of his contract with the European champions and is expected to leave the club either in January or at the end of the season, talks over a new deal having broken down with Bayern having withdrawn their offer of an extension.
The defender was understood to have been demanding a new contract that would move him closer to Robert Lewandowski as the club’s highest-earning player, demands Bayern were unwilling to match.
The availability of the Austrian international has alerted some of Europe’s leading clubs and AS are reporting that both Manchester clubs have now made formal contact with the player’s agent, Pini Zahavi, over a potential move to the Premier League, the report stating that Manchester United ‘will bid the strongest’ for the versatile defender.
Real Madrid have been strongly linked with a move for the 28-year-old but are believed to hold reservations over Alaba’s wage demands, whilst Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Chelsea have all been linked with a player comfortable at left-back, centre-back and in midfield.
Meanwhile, a move to Manchester City would see him reunite with former Bayern boss, Pep Guardiola, and while the Citizens have enjoyed a much improved defensive record this season and have plenty of options at centre-back, Alaba would perhaps provide a solution for them at left-back with Benjamin Mendy having been unable to stay fit on a regular basis since his arrival in English football.
Alaba has spent his entire senior career with Bayern to date and has made 404 appearances for the club in all competitions, winning nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies during a career with the German giants that looks to be nearing its conclusion.
Alaba will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign sides next month ahead of a potential free transfer move next summer, though Bayern could opt to sell the player in January at a reduced fee.
