Thomas Tuchel insists he won’t ‘lose faith’ with Kai Havertz and Timo Werner despite the struggles of the Chelsea duo so far this season.
Havertz and Werner arrived as the marquee additions of Chelsea‘s recruitment drive last summer, the pair costing a combined £115m.
Havertz has endured a frustrating campaign with injury and illness and has scored just once in the Premier League this season, whilst Werner has faded following an initial bright start and has visibly struggled for confidence in front of goal.
However, Tuchel has praised the defensive performance of the duo during Chelsea’s 2-0 win at Porto in midweek and has defended the summer signings despite recent criticism, insisting he will not ‘lose faith’ in the abilities of Havertz and Werner to turn their fortunes around.
“Look at the games Porto played in Champions League. Show me a nice and fluid performance from an opponent and we can talk again. They make it very tough,” Tuchel told his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s trip to Crystal Palace.
“It’s not the easiest task up front but they had a big impact defensively, they worked hard for us.
“We changed after 60, 65 minutes but we will not lose faith and trust. We accept sometimes it’s hard to have a big impact.”
