Tottenham close in on centre-back duo

Tottenham are closing in on the signing of centre-back duo Micky van de Ven and Ashley Phillips.

Ange Postecoglou has made the signing of central defenders his focus as Spurs continue to strengthen under the club’s new manager and the north Londoners are nearing agreements for a pair of centre-back options.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are at the ‘final stages’ of a deal for Wolfsburg’s Van de Ven, who impressed during a breakthrough season with the Bundesliga side last season.

The 22-year-old – who operates on the left side of the backline and can also feature at full-back – had been a reported transfer target for Liverpool.

Spurs are also set to finalise a deal for Blackburn Rovers teenager Ashley Phillips. The 18-year-old made 14 appearances for the Championship side last season and was named as the EFL Championship Apprentice of the Season for 2022/23.

The England u-19 international has a release clause of around £2m in his contract and Spurs are set to activate that clause to sign the promising defender.

Spurs have been active in the transfer market this summer as the club look to rebuild from a disappointing Premier League campaign.

Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro have signed on permanent deals after loan spells last season, while James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario and Manor Solomon have arrived as new recruits.
