Ten Hag insists FA Cup final ‘not about stopping’ Man City treble

Erik ten Hag insists Manchester United’s FA Cup final with Manchester City is not about stopping their rivals from winning the treble.

United will meet City in the first-ever domestic cup final between the two Manchester rivals this weekend, with the latter in pursuit of a historic treble.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been crowned Premier League champions for the fifth time in six seasons and face Inter Milan in the Champions League final on June 10.

Manchester United are the only side in history to have won a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble after lifting all three trophies in 1998/99, but Ten Hag insists the focus for his team is on winning the trophy and not stopping City from emulating their unique feat.

“We want to win a cup, it is not about stopping them, it is about winning the cup. We have a great opportunity,” he told his pre-match press conference.

“It is great that we deserve that opportunity to be in a cup final and meet Man City. It is a great opportunity and we fought so hard for it, we progressed so well that we are in the FA Cup final.”

United have shown progress during Ten Hag’s debut season, having secured Champions League qualification and reached both domestic cup finals. The Dutchman has been pleased with the development of his side, but insists the Red Devils ‘have a way to go’ before the club can challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.

“I think they do very good job, they play very good football so they deserve it,” Ten Hag said on City.

“Of course, I look at our opponents but we look to ourselves and you have to see where you are as a club and from there you have to make progress and I think we did over the last season, we made very good progress, we are in a good direction and we have our opportunity in the summer to make new targets, new goals over the short term.

“In the longer term they will stay the same. I said last year, we want to restore United but we have a way to go.”
