Sunderland return to their Premier League campaign on Saturday, welcoming Brighton to the Stadium of Light in their first game since the international break.

The Black Cats have been inconsistent so far and sit 14th in the Premier League with four points. They head into the fixture after losing their last two league matches before the break. Sunderland were beaten 2-0 at home by Arsenal, then suffered a high-scoring 5-3 defeat to Manchester City. Even so, their spirits may have lifted after a historic 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa League.

Sunderland team news

Sunderland face a major selection challenge ahead of the Brighton game, with manager Régis Le Bris set to work with a depleted squad after a difficult international break.

Brian Brobbey is definitely unavailable after picking up a hamstring injury while on national-team duty.

His absence is a significant setback, especially as he scored a superb hat-trick in Sunderland’s most recent match against Manchester City.

Defender Daniel Ballard and midfielder Habib Diarra have also returned from international duty with hamstring problems and will miss the match. Romaine Mundle remains out with a long-term knee injury.

There is some positive news for Sunderland, however: left-back Reinildo Mandava is available again after completing a one-match suspension. With Brobbey sidelined, Wilson Isidor is expected to start up front, while Malick Fofana is also pushing for a place in the starting XI.

Sunderland predicted lineup

Possible Sunderland starting XI: Roefs; Meunier, Mukiele, Danso, Reinildo; Xhaka, Sadiki; Fofana, Le Fee, Angulo; Isidor

When will the match kick off?

The match will kick off at 3pm BST on Saturday, 10th October.
