Spain vs Germany – Euro 2024 quarter-final match preview

Spain take on Germany in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 on Friday evening, as the tournament’s best side to date faces the host nation in a huge clash.

It’s a match-up between two of the favourites for the trophy in Stuttgart and a rematch of the 2008 final.

Here is everything you need to know about the clash.

So far so good for Spain who have eased into the quarter-finals with a perfect record. Barring an early shock to fall behind to Georgia in the Round of 16, La Roja have enjoyed a comfortable passage to the latter stages.

It’s now 12 wins from their last 14 internationals for Luis de la Fuente’s side, who are on a run of six straight victories. Their Euro 2024 campaign has seen just one goal conceded in four games and seven different goalscorers.

Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams have been the headline acts of La Roja’s tournament, with the wingers embodying a new-look Spain side. More direct and threatening in transition than past teams, the young duo have been among the most watchable talents in the tournament this summer.

Fabian Ruiz has been a Player of the Tournament contender further back, and De La Fuente is expected to name an unchanged team despite Nacho’s return to fitness.

Expectations were comparatively modest for Germany heading into Euro 2024, but an assured campaign from the host nation has seen optimism swell. Julian Nagelsmann’s team topped Group A without losing a game before easing past Denmark 2-0 in the last 16.

Jamal Musiala is the joint-leading scorer at Euro 2024 with three goals and has been the spark of a vibrant team, who are the tournament’s top scorers (10), rank third for shots per game (18), and second for average possession (65.8%) and XG (8.77). Germany are also conceding less shots per game (6.8) than any other side at Euro 2024 with Nagelsmann appearing to have turned around their form after a difficult start to his reign.

Nagelsmann faces a decision at centre-back with Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck having impressed in the absence of the suspended Jonathan Tah last time out. Florian Wirtz and Maximilian Mittelstadt are pushing to return to the side after being dropped for Leroy Sane and David Raum respectively against Denmark.

Last Meeting

Spain 1-1 Germany, November 27th 2022 (World Cup)

Spain and Germany met in the group stage at the 2022 World Cup after being paired together in Qatar. Alvaro Morata handed La Roja – who had thrashed Costa Rica 7-0 in their opening fixture – the lead on 62 minutes with a brilliant near-post flick, but Germany hit back via a substitute of their own.

Niclas Füllkrug thumped in a finish to equalise with seven minutes to go. Despite a win in their final fixture, Germany crashed out of the competition after Japan’s shock win over Spain condemned them to third place.

Spain have not lost in the last six competitive meetings between the teams, dating back to 1988.
